Cleaning Dental Implants
What Are Dental Implants? When you lose your teeth, you lose the entire structure, both the crown and the root. Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed into your jawbone. These posts fuse to your jawbone and act as the roots for prosthetic teeth. Implants can be used to hold a single tooth, a fixed bridge of several teeth, even a removable prosthesis that snaps into place. In instances where you need all of your teeth replaced, only a few implants are required in each jaw to hold an entire arch of teeth.
How Do Implants Work?In order for you to get implants, any teeth that are no longer viable must be removed. Holes are drilled and titanium posts implanted. Impressions are taken of your mouth and are sent off to a lab to create your custom prosthetic teeth. You will go home with a temporary set of prosthetic teeth so that you can eat and speak while you heal. When your permanent prosthesis is ready, we will fit them and secure them in place. For fixed teeth, they are screwed in. Others may be snapped into place.
The Healing ProcessHealing from dental implants can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks, depending upon how many you have received. When you first go home, you are advised to rest, and avoid any strenuous activities. Eating a nutritious diet is crucial to helping you heal, but at first, it will be best to eat soft foods. We will provide you with a specific set of care instructions. You will also need to return to the office occasionally while you heal so that Dr. Falk or Dr. Krieger can check on the progress of your implants, and make sure that they are fusing correctly.
Benefits of ImplantsDental implants offer a variety of benefits:
Am I a Good Candidate?Candidates for dental implants are those who are in overall good health. You must be free of gum disease. Your jaw must have sufficient bone density, or else you may require a bone graft before receiving implants. You must also be a nonsmoker, or at least be willing to give up smoking for an extended period of time both before the procedure and while you heal. Smoking can affect the healing process and decrease the success of implants fusing.
