Dentures have long been the chosen solution when you lose a full arch of teeth. These removable prosthetic teeth allow for you to have your life back, granting you the abilities to eat and speak properly. But dentures can be a lot of work. They may come loose in your mouth as you eat or talk, which can lead to a rather embarrassing situation. They can be painful, as they are supported by your gums, causing denture sores and inflammation. Dr. Falk and Dr. Krieger here at Canyon Oral & Facial Surgery can offer a new solution – the All-on-4® treatment concept.
What Is the All-on-4® Treatment Concept?
The All-on-4® treatment concept by Nobel Biocare is one that utilizes dental implants to replace a full arch of missing teeth. Implants are small, titanium rods that are surgically placed into your jaw. With other forms of dental implants, we would decide how many implants would be required to hold a full arch of teeth, but this concept only uses four (if you needed both arches replaced, we would give you a total of eight implants). The two in the front are placed vertically while the two in the back are placed at an angle.
Benefits of the All-on-4® Treatment Concept
The All-on-4® treatment concept has many benefits:
Implants are stable. They will not move around in your mouth or fall out.
This treatment option is more comfortable than dentures, as the prosthetic teeth are supported by the implants rather than your gums.
They are permanent and do not need to be removed each night. You can, and should, take care of them just as you would your natural teeth.
The titanium rods function like the roots of your teeth, which stops bone reabsorption. This means that your face will not change shape and you will not need a new prosthesis.
Because the back two implants are tilted at a 45 degree angle, they use more available bone, eliminating the need for a bone graft.
On the day of your surgery, all teeth remaining in your jaw will be extracted. One of our skilled oral surgeons will drill into your jaw to make space for the rods. After your implants are inserted, a mold is taken of your jaw and sent to a lab to create a permanent set of prosthetic teeth. Abutments are placed on the tops of the rods. You are given a temporary arch of teeth to use while you heal and your permanent prosthetic is made.
Healing can take anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks. During this time, it is best to eat only soft foods, ones that won't irritate your gums. In the early days of healing, you may even want to eat only liquid foods. What you do eat should be nutritious, and you shouldn't skip meals, as nutrients are vital to ensure healing. You will also come back to the office occasionally during this process so that we can make sure that your implants are properly fusing with your jawbone. When your permanent prosthesis is ready, you will come back so that we can place it. After this time, you should be able to go back to eating all of your favorite foods.
